Helen Cutter gets injured in the Cretaceous – those pterosaurs are nasty – and as part of her master plan...hurts herself worse?

Whatever you're into, lady.

At the ARC, Nick accuses Jenny of being Claudia.

"No, I know that you think that your name's Jenny Lewis, but you're actually a woman called Claudia Brown. There's a good reason for this, I can explain it."

"Yes, meet Professor Nick Cutter. A fascinating study of the tipping point between inspiration and lunacy."

Oh, Lester, you love him really. Also, can Nick really explain it? I thought no one really understood it?

Connor whisks him off to freak out in private – I love Connor here, he's very empathetic – and agrees that he believes Nick believes, but this really isn't the time to go batshit. Nick pulls himself together and apologises to Jenny, who takes it very calmly.

Lester attempts to explain Jenny's job to her. She doesn't believe him.

"One thing I can promise you, Jenny, this job's quite unlike anything you've done before."

"Oh, I doubt it. When you've been in PR as long as I have, nothing much can surprise you anymore."

I would like to hear stories about Jenny’s earlier jobs.

A group of – sales people of some kind? – are preparing a presentation in an office block. Several floors above them, an Anomaly opens and begins spewing out thick fog. We can tell it’s evil because it’s YELLOW. Also the maintenance man who goes to investigate is eaten by THINGS.

The sales persons ignore the fire alarm and continue their pitch. Apparently they're selling Japanese beer. Is it very different from British beer? Or Irish, for that matter?

The building evacuates, apart from the salespeople, and two firepeople go to investigate. The chief is swept off his feet, coming back up for just long enough to exhort his female companion to run for it.

Nick is explaining their idea for the Anomaly Detector to Lester and Leek. Lester grumbles about the possible price tag but tells Nick to go ahead, agreeing when Nick insists it should be Connor's project.

The sales people have finally twigged something is wrong. One of them goes to see what's happening and is eaten by the THINGS.

Connor and Abby are trying to agree on what DVD to rent, but it's not going terribly well. Abby eventually gives up and leaves him to it. Connor continues browsing until he's approached by Caroline, who starts flirting.

Photobucket

"You know, I don't really feel like horror tonight. I feel like something a bit more..."

"Erotic...romantic!"

Oh, Connor, we love you.

Stephen finds Helen in his bathroom, complaining about her injury. He wraps it up, tells her she needs antibiotics, and then doesn’t give her any but tells her she'll be fine anyway.

Photobucket

Helen apologises, not very sincerely, for hurting him and his relationship with Nick.

The ARC intercepts calls from the office building. Jenny is baffled by some of the lingo – “Creature?"

Connor brings Caroline back to the flat – a different flat from last year – where Rex tries to bite her. Abby is not-so-secretly pleased with him.

"She picked me up at the video shop."

"She picked you up?"

"Yeah, a lot of women find me attractive."

You tell her, Connor.

They're both summoned back into work. Caroline writes her number on Connor's hand as seductively as she can and makes him promise to call her.

Photobucket

I love his look here – ‘omigod she’s touching me!?!’

Stephen has also been called in. He tells Helen he wants her gone when he gets back.

At the office block Jenny tells Nick to stop staring at her before competently clearing the area and ordering all the firemen out. Stephen catches up as they reach the building and he and Nick head upstairs. The fog is rolling down from above.

Photobucket

“Smells like sh – something rotting.”

Nick guesses the Anomaly goes to the Precambrian, a lot of sulphur and carbon dioxide. They find and rescue the female firefighter, fighting off giant worms to get her out. One worm dies when they remove it from the fog, leading to their basic plan: Operation Blow Fog Away.

Photobucket

Nick tells Stephen to call Connor to work on it.

Nick ignores a phone call from Jenny – he already has her name and number in his phone! – who is rapidly getting very pissed off down in the lobby.

They head for the Anomaly, which they now know is on the fifteenth floor. The stairs are impassable, so they call a lift. When it gets to them, though, a worm rears out and they're separated as they try to escape it.

Photobucket

Connor and Abby, for some reason, have gone to the ARC instead of the Anomaly site. They assess and refuse all the weapons in the armoury – again, why do the soldiers not accompany the team? We know there are soldiers at the ARC. What exactly do they do?

Abby suggests visiting a garden centre and Connor agrees.

As they head out of the ARC they pass the Cleaner from the previous episode, now dressed as a soldier and with scars on his neck. Connor recognises him, but Abby drags him off before he can do anything about it.

Photobucket

"I swear that that was the guy from the shopping mall, the Cleaner..."

"...Why would one of Lester's soldiers pretend to be a cleaner in a shopping mall? Come on."

Stephen is surrounded by worms.

Photobucket
I love this, I have this mental image of one of the crew standing right up against him and going "I'm a woooorm! Wormy wormy wormy, I'm a wooooorm..."

He uses his watch alarm to distract them and slides into the lift shaft. The lift is somewhere below him.

I am impressed he managed to set his watch alarm by feel, behind his back. I can’t do that when I’m looking at mine, usually!

In the lobby, Jenny calls Nick to see what's happening. Nick agrees she can come up to see but warns her against using the lifts. Jenny decides she can't be bothered climbing stairs in her heels, so uses the lift anyway.

Photobucket

Stephen starts climbing up the shaft, but of course he's in the same shaft as Jenny's lift, so he has to climb really fast. Jumping onto the roof of the lift doesn't occur to him. Anyway, the lift nearly crushes him but then doesn't.

Jenny gets attacked as soon as she leaves the lift; a worm tries to eat her hair. Whatever you're into, worm.

Photobucket

Nick grabs a samurai sword that just happens to be on display, and is a working sword, and cuts the head off the worm. Jenny returns the favour when a worm tries to eat his leg, swinging a bit too close to home for Nick's comfort – “WATCH!...where you're swinging that thing!"

Photobucket

They then fight a bit before Nick stalks off – leaving the woman by herself, Nick? Really? – and Jenny follows him. Culture shock sets in at this point and Nick suggests she go back downstairs as Connor and Abby arrive, armed with leaf-blowers.

For the record, the first time I watched this I said ‘leaf blowers’ as soon as the worm started dying.

Stephen breaks out of the lift shaft and ends up perched on a table in an office. It’s a bit lacking in weapons, so he’s more or less stuck.

Photobucket

The sales people have made their deal and are now about to be eaten by the worms, who have figured out how to open doors. Nick and the others arrive just in time to rescue them and bring them back to the stairs.

Connor proclaims that they should be alright now and is promptly eaten by a worm. Karma doesn’t like you, Connor.

Photobucket

Nick cuts the head off, miraculously avoiding hitting Connor, and I have to go throw up a little, excuse me.

Photobucket

Jenny hustles the two sales people out, already telling them what to say. Connor heads to a bathroom to clean some of the slime off and accidentally washes Caroline’s number off his hand.

Operation Blow Fog Away becomes Operation Raise Internal Heat, and Connor and Abby are dispatched to the fifteenth floor to take care of that while Nick goes looking for Stephen. Jenny follows Nick, wanting to help.

“You don’t approve of me, do you?”

“No, I used to think you were really something, but you’re not that person.”

“Am I supposed to understand that?”

“No, I guess not.”

Connor and Abby can’t get through the corridors of the fifteenth floor –

“Foggy?”

“Bit foggy, yeah.”

– so they retreat to the ventilation shafts. There’s a lot of touching and crawling over each other and the like.

Photobucket

Jenny is surprised that Nick will still risk himself for Stephen after Helen’s revelations.

“And you think that I should leave him up there to die just because of what happened with him and Helen?”

“Some people would.”

“Well, I’m not one of them. Whatever problems I’ve got with Stephen, I can sort them out for myself.”

She suggests that Nick, as team leader, shouldn’t be risking himself. You know, you’re right, Jenny. That’s the soldiers’ jobs. Where are they? Loafing around back in the ARC!

Stephen, attempting to make a run for it across the tables, is knocked to the ground and menaced by a worm. He gets a lovely photocopy of it’s mouth piece – hope someone remembers to collect that before they let the workers back in.

Abby and Connor have found the server room. Abby turns the temperature up but is attacked by a worm before she can get back into the shaft. She kickboxes it to death and then climbs all over Connor getting back up. He doesn’t seem to mind much.

Nick and Jenny find Stephen as the fog starts to clear. The worms, on dying, swell up and explode – weird that the one that died earlier didn’t do that. They spray out leech-type things that try and eat the team alive,

Photobucket

but Nick sets off the fire sprinklers with Jenny’s lighter – does she smoke? – and things calm down.

“Claudia, are you alright?”

Don’t call me Claudia! And I’m fine.”

A little later Stephen suggests that maybe the ARC should come clean about the Anomalies. Nick thinks that’s a bad idea.

When Stephen gets home, Helen is gone.

At Connor and Abby’s the pair are congratulating each other on a job well done when Caroline breezes in, saying she forgot her mobile. Connor asks her out, more or less – “Do you fancy a drink? Like, not a cup of tea, obviously. Like, a proper drink. You know, somewhere, out there.”

“Why not?”

Caroline sweetly invites Abby along, but she refuses.

Urgh, Connor, you haven’t even cleaned the worm slime off yet. Gross.

Photobucket

Nick goes to Jenny’s house. He has a picture of him and Claudia in his wallet, which he looks at for strength before knocking on Jenny’s door.

Photobucket

When she opens it, he rambles out a brief description of the Claudia situation before cutting himself off when Jenny’s significant other comes to the door. He leaves without waiting for Jenny to answer him.

Photobucket

Helen is watching from across the road.
