On a cliff. A researcher makes a video diary; he's searching for some kind of animal and hasn't seen it yet. It's been eating life stock in the area.

"The locals are totally freaked. Well, the locals are freaks. But that's probably unrelated."

Something roars outside. He goes out to check and it all goes very Blair Witch Project, night vision and jump cuts. He is dragged away.

A woman wakes up, hearing noises. Her husband does not wake up. She picks her way through the house and finds a small Creature. When it tries to bite her, she flushes it down the loo. Bad form, that woman.

So quick recap – in fact, I'll let Lester do it for me:

Photobucket

Five years ago I was put in charge of the ARC, a top secret government project investigating rips in time known as Anomalies. These Anomalies allow long extinct creatures from distant eras to cross into our own time....

Photobucket

A new team was put in place and many changes made to the ARC. Their battle continues. There is always a new threat. Whatever it is, we'll deal with it.

Danny is trapped in the Rift Valley, four million years ago. Connor and Abby are trapped in the Cretaceous, something between seventy five million years ago and seventy one million years ago. No one in the ARC knows where or when they are, and in current time they've been missing for a year.

On an out-of-world note, I love that my DVD case tells me Gideon and Ethan are joining the team this year. Brilliant.

Picking straight up from the last episode. Also, this is the only ep that has a Previously on: on my DVDs. It leads straight into the credits. )
In a forest somewhere. It's all very pastoral.

Until a quad bike races through on its way to a campsite. People set up tents or race around or rescue bikes.

Something cries. A biker stops to investigate. It's a sort of rhino. The parent finds him with the baby and isn't happy.

Two very swish cars race down a track together.

The team pull up at a gate. There's some banter and joking as they get sorted out; Sarah's with them, apparently now officially part of the field team.

"I hate it when you pull rank."

Photobucket

"I hate sitting in the back."

Photobucket

"You sat in the front last time."

Photobucket

"Who keeps track?!"

Photobucket

"Connor does."

The guard tries to keep them out, but they completely ignore him, watching the cars go by with some admiration before piling back in the Jeep to head towards the Anomaly.

They search through a large garage area. Becker heads off to evacuate the area, while Connor finds an easily visible, really obvious Anomaly.

Photobucket

Abby steps in some gunk. This means a Creature, and they search carefully around. Connor does not complain about splitting up.

Danny investigates a parked truck, discovering a huge bug thing on the roof. He leads it out into the open, where a car Becker has failed to evacuate smushes it. Danny gets gunged. It's really gross.

It's possibly helpful to know that Tony Curran, here playing Sir William, also played Vincent van Gogh on Dr Who.

In a medieval church people are hiding out from something that's roaring outside. Vincent Van Gogh, playing a knight called Sir William, is blessed by a priest as he heads out to fight it.

Forties music plays as Abby, Connor, Sarah and Danny longue around a cabin. Connor and Abby are dancing; the girls are in evening dresses and the boys in suits.

Photobucket

Sarah interrupts the dance to read from a journal. Whoever wrote it was the last of a group of people who had all been killed. The others gather around to listen.

"There's no one left. The others are all dead. God help me, it's happening again. They're here."

The record scratches and Connor goes to turn it off. In the silence they hear Creatures calling from outside. Danny sends the girls out the back and he and Connor go to look around. They're attacked by giant ostrich looking things.

(Yes, I know - a lot of Connor. But I am very proud of the mushroomifying sequence. And I think it's hard to have too much Connor, right?)

A business man – some kind of stock market guy? – yells on the phone to his assistant. The assistant is picking up papers from Stock Market Guy's flat when he sees an Anomaly, mistaking it for an art piece. As you do.

Photobucket

His phone gets sucked into the Anomaly and he goes after it, coming out in a forest. On a mountain. He touches some fungus – as you do – and it spits spores at him.

Photobucket

He steps back through the Anomaly, already sick, and chokes down the phone at SMG. (His name is actually Sir Richard, but I shall continue to call him SMG, because it makes me think of Buffy.) The assistant then throws up a strange black dust all over the floor before falling back through the Anomaly, which closes. Behind him, fungus starts spreading all over the apartment.

Evil Christine is studying photos of the Artefact.

Her captain tells her it's in the ARC, unless it was destroyed. Christine will not settle for that and wants it back.

They enter a viewing room. A group of scientists are standing around a Predator which turns out to be rather less unconscious than they thought it was. The scientists pile out and the Predator drunkenly destroys the room.
Photobucket

Christine and the captain both flinch when it tries to break through the glass. The captain electrocutes the Predator, warning Christine that the ARC will pick them up. Christine is confident she can handle them.

A Clone soldier listens to his radio, nods, and orders "Go!" Other soldiers pile up stairs, holding guns. They burst onto a roof and cock their guns.

Helen turns off a stopwatch. It took them one minute twenty two. "Not bad." Ordering one soldier to follow her, she goes to the edge of the roof.

Several floors down are raised roofs over what might be greenhouses. Helen orders the soldier to jump; he considers it. Helen repeats, "Listen to my voice. I said jump."

He takes a run and smashes into the roof. Helen smiles. "Death means nothing to you, does it? You're lucky."

Oooh, creepy old house. That's never a good sign.

Fourteen years ago, the house was neither creepy nor old.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Several teens and pre teens break in, using a key cunningly hidden on top of the earth in a planter. Smart. Inside, they spread out and look around. It's a really nice house.

Two of the kids head upstairs to skateboard. Another goes to poke around in the kitchen, but his friend's dying screams interrupt him. Typical. No respect, these kids.

He heads back into the foyer and looks warily upstairs. There are chattering noises and things breaking upstairs. He edges up a few steps, calling for his friends.

Something lunges at him and he falls back downstairs. He can't see anything, but it's there.

A quick recap of Primeval's first two seasons. A team in Britain, based in London, have discovered Anomalies, rips in space/time. Creatures can and have come through; usually prehistoric, but some from Earth's future as well. The team identifies and contains these Incursions.

The team currently consists of Nick Cutter, a evolutionary scientist, Connor Temple, his former student and now the project's go-to tech guy, Abby Maitland, a zoologist specialising in lizards and animal behaviour, Jenny Lewis, their PR manager, and James Lester, their long-suffering Home Office boss. Former members of the team are Stephen Hart, Nick's right hand man, and Captain Tom Ryan, their military minder. Both were killed, separately, in Creature attacks. Their main opponent is Helen Cutter, Nick's wife. She left him to explore the Anomalies and currently has some rather apocalyptic views on evolution.

Tom Ryan's death was relatively early on in what's known as the ARC project – Anomaly Research Centre – but Stephen's death is very fresh.

So. On to Season Three. )
So quick recap. Leek has been working with Helen Cutter to collect various dangerous extinct and/or not yet evolved animals for some reason. He's already tried to kill Lester; Lester applied a Mammoth to the situation. Now he's captured the team and is showing off his ill-gotten gains. Oh, and Stephen, who's sort of vaguely a bit on Helen's side, has been fired from the team and has no idea at all about what's going on.

On with the episode. )
On a busy motorway, traffic is basically stalled. A mother entertains her son by explaining where his father is. The kid seems more interested in his toy dinosaurs.

There's a lot of noise coming from somewhere up ahead, and people are fleeing in terror. A mammoth is trashing things. )
In a flat a preteen girl is playing with her dog.

Photobucket

This is Taylor, the girl, and Spratt. Taylor's father figure Steve isn't too happy with them. Taylor takes Spratt outside, but she pulls away and they hurtle through alleys and into an Anomaly.

The other side is vaguely desert like, and it's either night time or there's a serious storm blowing in. Taylor looks around and pronounces it cool. While looking for Spratt, she sees things moving in the sand. One is coming straight for her...

But she doesn't run. )
Sorry it's been so long since the last one! Health issues.

Some kids are playing basketball, ignorant of the pipe cover nearby that keeps lifting and spewing out water. One of the kids, Lucien, misses the ball and is sent to get it. It's landed in the now uncovered pipe and is floating. Lucien picks his way over the very marshy ground and rescues it. Then he's grabbed by a thing.

The kids have found another ball and ignore his yells for help, even though one looks over and he's clearly in trouble. Nice friends, Lucien. )
Some paintballers run around in an amusement park. Something may or may not be chasing them.

The girls can’t recognise a teenage boy howling. )
Helen Cutter gets injured in the Cretaceous – those pterosaurs are nasty – and as part of her master plan...hurts herself worse?

Whatever you're into, lady. )
