The Man Who Fell to Earth
The strange Tim Curry man orders some ugly reptile looking creatures to hurry up with whatever they're doing. They seem to be afraid of him.
Urgh. I'd forgotten how ugly Grendlers are.
What they're doing turns out to be digging up Commander O'Neill, who seems to be less dead than previously suspected. He doesn't get to enjoy it for very long before the creatures throw a sack over his head and hurry him off.
Tim Curry laughs about it.
Oooh, sinister.
Danziger voiceovers about their journey and how he misses the stations, despite the fact that he never felt he belonged there. He and Devon have a face off about the vehicles; Danziger wants to take it easy as these aren't long haul vehicles. Devon just wants to get there quickly.
Julia comes to check on Alonzo. He's adamant that his dreams have stopped and he won't be seeing the Terrians anymore. Danziger voiceovers about how Alonzo has been changed by the planet.
Someone is watching them through binoculars, taking an odd amount of interest in True and her Koba pet. Oh, it’s Tim Curry.
Morgan sees Yale's hologram fail and runs to Bess for protection. Apparently Yales as a class were recalled and destroyed years ago because on some units the memory wipe failed. One unit jumped forty one stories to kill himself when he remembered what he'd done.
Morgan's very paranoid. Also, where inside a station do you get forty one stories? Down an elevator shaft?
Danziger gets the group moving again. He voiceovers about Uly and how they haven’t really asked themselves what was done to him. Uly and Devon attempt to out-stubborn each other.
While they set up camp Danziger wonders if the Terrians will be back tonight, and if so how will they come.
Why does True look so guilty?
True and Uly go searching for wood with ZERO. True's not paying much attention to Uly for whatever reason. Then they find something and she screams. A lot.
Danziger and Devon get to them first, but everyone else is close behind. True has all but fallen over an unconscious Tim Curry.
A little later he's been moved into the medical tent. Morgan sneaks in, although I'm not sure why he's sneaking; Alonzo, Devon, Julia, Danziger and Bess are all already in there.
Where are there so many people in a medical tent? If I was Julia I'd throw some of them out...
The stranger wakes up and, in fits and starts, tells them that his name is Gaal, he was an astronaut on an early mission and got stranded here fifteen years ago. He was attacked by Grendlers, the ugly reptile-things.
The kids are peeking through the base of the tent. Yale catches them and is very angry that once again they’ve broken the rules. He sends them to bed in disgrace.
Gaal makes nice with Alonzo, talking about the Terrians and how they invade dreams. Alonzo falls for it.
Smooth, Gaal.
When Gaal's released from the med tent Devon explains that they weren't actually looking for him, and that they can't rescue him for nearly two years yet. But he's welcome to come along with them if he wants. Gaal does want, very much.
Her time frame's changed! It was nine months to New Pacifica two days ago. Now it's eleven months for some reason...
Bess and Yale discuss Gaal. Yale points out that ’15 years’ is really only an approximation as the years are so different here. Bess asks about the project Gaal was flying on and is very impressed that Yale can simply rattle off the information.
Julia approaches Gaal and hunkers in front of him to ask how he was hurt. Gaal explains the Grendlers. Morgan joins them to say he’s seen one. Gaal agrees that the Grendlers probably stole the cargo pod, as they’re natural traders and not above stealing anything they find.
Julia's got some balance...
Julia is called from elsewhere in the camp and awkwardly excuses herself. Gaal sees True checking her bag and implies to Morgan that she's been stealing rations. This does not make Morgan happy.
I love how Gaal knows already exactly where to start stirring...
Morgan storms over and snatches the bag. True tries to get it back. Bess intervenes but too late; the Koba, feeling threatened, shoots Morgan.
Julia does her best but her diaglove's shocks aren't enough to keep his heart going. Danziger attempts CPR, which is apparently 'an old-fashioned military method'
How does Danziger know military stuff?
but it's not enough. Morgan's dead.
Except maybe he isn't. Gaal assures them that the sting only knocks humans into a coma. If they're careful, Morgan will wake in about two days with no problems.
Devon's devastated. They buried Commander O'Neill.
The group race back across the ground they've already covered, but when they get there the grave is empty and O'Neill is missing.
Julia tells Devon Uly is almost back to full strength. Uly suggests asking the Terrians for help finding O’Neill. Devon brushes him off and tells him to rest.
Danziger, searching the area through binoculars, sees Gaal wandering back towards camp. When confronted, Gaal claims he was looking for O'Neill.
Oh, Gaal, Danziger doesn't trust you!
Gaal describes the Grendlers as ants and offers to ask them about O’Neill.
Did ants make it onto the stations? Would someone raised there know what they were?
True slips into the medical tent where Bess is sitting over Morgan. She apologises; she genuinely didn't mean any harm, she just wanted a pet. Bess accepts the apology but reminds her that her 'pet' has now hurt two of the group. "You're a smart person, True. I'm trusting that you don't have to learn your lesson a third time."
True, you should be careful not to push any buttons on that machinery you're leaning against...
Danziger teaches Uly how to run. Devon doesn’t like that, especially since Uly has scraped his knee. She sends him off to Julia. Devon and Danziger have a fight about parenting, interrupted when a Grendler arrives.
Two Grendlers have arrived to talk to Gaal. They're even uglier through gunsights than they are just to look at.
How does the gun stay target locked when he's waving it around like that?
Gaal comes back and tells Devon and Danziger that the Grendlers wanted all three of the group’s generators. Gaal talked them down to one.
They carry the generator away from camp while Gaal summons the Grendlers back.
In the med tent that evening, Morgan wakes up. Bess is overjoyed. They don’t have much time to celebrate, though, before they hear an explosion. Over Morgan’s objections, Bess leaves him in True’s care and goes to see what’s happening.
Oh yeah, Bess, wave the light around so everyone can see you...
Bess decides there’s nothing there and turns around...straight into O’Neill.
He doesn’t know where he was and he’s very angry at the group as a whole. Devon smoothes it over. O’Neill says the Grendlers can talk. Gaal agrees they can mimic human speech but they don’t really know what they’re saying.
Julia goes to check on Alonzo, who’s asleep even though he seems to be on watch. She doesn’t bother waking him.
He’s dreaming, running through trees and meeting Terrians every time he turns around. He sees other humans, all wearing collars, wander through the trees. The collars seem to lock them on a specific path, shocking them if they step off it.
Gaal wakes him to ‘rescue’ him from the dream.
Morgan invites himself into O’Neill’s tent and asks what he saw when he was dead.
Nice that they had a spare empty tent for him...
Morgan himself saw a very bad place...very loud, very bright. He doesn’t want to go there again.
I kind of like Morgan when he’s not being completely self centered.
O’Neill says he went to a better place, somewhere he felt at home. Morgan thinks that sounds nice. O’Neill, in a moment of kindness, says that Morgan probably wasn’t ready to die yet and that’s why he went to the bad place.
Bess invites Uly, who’s on Terrian watch, to come running with him.
O’Neill sees Gaal fiddling with the ‘Rover. He asks about Gaal’s astronaut days, invoking the head by name. Gaal claims not to remember him.
Ha, Gaal, O’Neill doesn’t believe you either!
O’Neill fishes for something to catch Gaal out. Gaal knows he’s doing it. O’Neill knows he knows. Neither can do anything about it, though.
I like that O’Neill still has his scar. That’s good continuity.
Devon asks O’Neill to be careful on his vengeance quest. He agrees.
Uly has gotten ahead of Bess. Out of her line of sight, he glances back over his shoulder and immediately crashes into a Terrian.
Uly must have seen the Terrian before he looked back...there’s no time!
It doesn’t speak; he looks away as Bess calls him and when he turns back it’s gone. When Bess asks him what’s wrong he says he was just waiting for her.
O’Neill follows Gaal through the woods.
Uly and Bess arrive back at camp and Uly confesses to Devon that he went running. Devon sends him to get his suit. When he comes back with it, she tells him that it’s now his responsibility to take care of it, that he has to find somewhere for it and know where it is all the time. Uly is thrilled that he doesn’t have to wear it anymore and runs off.
O’Neill has followed Gaal to a cave.
Love the two-bulb torches. I want one.
He stumbles over the generator and follows a cable running from it. As he nears the end two Grendlers come along. He ducks into hiding, all but tripping over a pile of human skeletons.
The cave opens out into a clearing piled with stuff. O’Neill fingers a pile of collars like the ones Alonzo dreamed about. There’s all kinds of canisters and things all over the place.
Gaal comes up behind him. Both stop playing the game; Gaal is not an astronaut, he’s a criminal. The Stations dumped them as a penal colony. Gaal’s the last survivor, by his own claim.
The Grnedlers jump O’Neill as he draws his gun. Gaal says that he’s killed twenty people on the Stations and six on the planet and plans to take over Eden Advance, killing off the men and keeping the women. He starts with O’Neill.
So what was the generator for? Did I miss it?
Gaal stumbles back into camp, calling loudly for help. O’Neill’s body isjust outside the camp perimeter. They were jumped by Terrians, Gaal says. He tried to help.
Would the stations really run a 45 year mission just to get rid of seven people? Why didn’t they just throw them out an airlock, or put them in a ship with no guidance systems?
Gaal leads them to the body as Danziger voiceovers about how much they have to learn about this planet. He’s glad they have a guide now, someone who knows about the planet.
Does no one hear the crazy laughing?
