Two lifeguards are swimming after hours. The female lifeguard goes to get changed while her boyfriend goes for another dive. He is eaten by a Creature. Remember, kids, always wait an hour after eating before swimming.
The Creature swims around in front of the girl, who screams.
At Home Office, Nick, Claudia and Lester watch Connor report over a weblink about the Anomaly they dealt with last episode. Lester is not so impressed – “Who’s that idiot?”
“Connor Temple. He looks like a half-wit, but he has a very good brain.”
“We may stand on the brink of Armageddon, but at least we have an irritating student on our side. How reassuring.”
I really hope that link was one way, because whatever about Lester, Nick should not be talking about Connor like that in his hearing.

Nick suggests that reports through history of things like monsters and dragons may be evidence of Anomalies. Maybe they’ve been around longer than anyone realises.
Connor is now at the hospital with Stephen. They discuss Stephen's lack of memory, just in case we'd forgotten about it.

"It's all been a bit scary, hasn't it? You know, it's not until you got bitten that I thought that one of us might actually die from doing this. Really upset me."
"You must have gone through hell."
"Yep. It did make me think about what's important, though, you know. Sorts out your priorities a bit - if you get killed, can I have your iPod?"
I love this scene just for the tone - Stephen's got a great 'long-suffering older brother indulgence' thing going on, and Connor's just having fun. It's brilliant.
Abby comes in, wearing a skirt and perfume. The boys trip over themselves a bit. Connor has randomly acquired a pillow from somewhere, for some reason. Gotta love continuity errors.
Abby offers to bring Stephen home, but his girlfriend is coming to pick him up. Connor comforts her by telling her she looks great.
At the pool, Nick and Claudia are talking to a detective. He thinks the female lifeguard killed her boyfriend and is trying to figure out what she did with the body. Nick, of course, sets him straight - "Anthony Barton was killed by an ancient marine predator, which then returned to its home, millions of years in the past." - and is naturally assumed to be insane.
Connor, Abby and Stephen are running tests at the poolside. We approve of these tests, because they require Stephen to be shirtless and wet.

Connor attempts to ask about Stephen's girlfriend. Stephen ignores or redirects the questions and eventually dives into the pool. Well, rolls into the pool.
At Home Office Claudia asks Lester to intervene on behalf of Diane, the lifeguard. Lester refuses, saying he needs to keep the story quiet. He promises that when they've got the situation under control, he'll make sure the charges are dropped. Claudia isn't happy, but Lester points out that sometimes undesirable decisions have to be made - that's why they're in government.
The Creature swims around in a small harbour. A lump of meat surfaces and people panic.
Nick and Claudia tell Lester that the meat from the harbour is definitely Anthony. The Anomaly must have closed in one location and immediately reopened in another.
At the harbour, Connor shows Nick that the water level is dropping. The Anomaly is somewhere underwater.

The Creature swims around underwater.
Nick is studying the scene as a whole when Claudia approaches him. She tries to get him to talk about Helen, but he realises suddenly that the steam over the water is marking the Anomaly - warmer water is coming through from the other side.

Nick and Stephen, in wet suits, head off to find the source of the steam. On the beach, Connor isn't happy - "Why does Stephen get all the fun stuff to do whilst we get stuck collecting water samples?"
"He looks better in a wetsuit."
"That's debateable. I could do the action stuff too as well, you know. I'm not just a massive intellect."
Poor Connor.
Abby is upset that Stephen asked her out when he already had a girlfriend. Connor points out that maybe the poison was confusing him.
I love how Connor sticks up for Stephen here - it's much better for him if Abby has nothing to do with Stephen, but he still tries to smooth things over. So sweet.
And then he changes his mind and agrees "He's a two-timing weasel, and maybe you should put that down to experience and move on. You know, there's plenty more fish in the sea."
Connor suddenly notices the Creature starting to surface. They are both waist-deep in the water, getting samples.
I kind of wonder if the director just said “Do sciencey things!” given that they seem a little unsure of what they’re doing.
Underwater, Nick and Stephen are swimming with a soldier. He goes through the previously-invisible Anomaly and they both stop, hovering.
Out on the surface, the Creature is circling Abby.

They wait for it to vanish before dashing for the shore as best they can. The Creature follows them, waddling partway up the bank. Connor holds it off with an oar,

finally wedging it into the Creature's mouth. It retreats through the Anomaly, which closes up behind it.
A little later, Connor tells Nick he thinks it was a Mosasaur, probably from the Cretaceous, and, luckily for them, not fully-grown. Abby thanks Connor for saving her life and hugs him. He hangs on just a little too long.

At Home Office, Nick says that the Anomaly could recur at any body of water along the line between the pool and harbour. Lester dismisses his concerns. That's not a good idea, Lester.
At a family home, the mother finds her basement flooded. Something is swimming around in it, but she doesn’t notice.
At the University Connor is studying information on the Mosasaur. Tom and Duncan approach and he hastily tidies away his things.

Tom reminds him about movie night but Connor blows them off. Duncan suggests he’s got a girlfriend; neither thinks much of that. Tom thinks maybe he’s found out about a new fossil find and is trying to keep them from finding out about it. They agree to keep an eye on him.
Stephen is starting to remember bits and pieces. He confronts Nick to know why the other man didn’t mention Helen. Nick doesn’t want to play her game. Stephen agrees not to tell, but “If she was my wife, I’d go through a million anomalies for her.”

At the woman’s house, the (very Welsh) plumber she’s called in is eaten by something.
I do love a Welsh accent. Actually, I love most any accent.
The team head for the woman’s house. It’s on the line Nick predicted. Lester is not happy.
In her cellar, the body of the diver lost in the harbour is floating around. Tied around his wrist is a handkerchief with HC embroidered on it.

Ryan shows it to Claudia, who passes it on to Nick. It’s to tell him that Helen is waiting on the other side of the Anomaly. Claudia’s pissed he didn’t tell anyone about her.
Outside Stephen tells Abby that he remembers what he said to her. She brushes him off – “There’s no need to make a big thing out of it. I fancied you for a bit and now I don’t. That’s all.”

Lester has arrived and is furious with Nick. He wants Helen back here now to explain what she knows about the Anomaly. His plan is to send Nick with a military escort. Nick has his own plan; he’ll go through, alone, and try to persuade her back. Lester accepts.
Stephen harnesses Nick into a diving suit and gives him a harpoon gun. Outside the room, Lester and Claudia are arguing very hard about something we can’t hear. Nick dives into the water and swims through the Anomaly.

In the past he finds Helen swimming, naked, in a pool. Nick carefully doesn’t watch until she’s dressed. She tells him she didn’t come back to him eight years ago because he would have wanted to share the Anomalies with the world and she didn’t want to give them up.
I love the little smile when he’s looking at the Hesperonis. He’s always so charmed by the Creatures, it’s lovely.
Back at the house, Connor realises that in theory a Creature could get from the basement to the river through the sewage system. From the river, it could go anywhere it wanted.
In the past, Helen asks Nick to come through the Anomalies with her. She promised to tell him anything he wants to know if he’ll follow her. Nick asks her to come with him instead, and when she refuses he turns to go back to the Anomaly.

As he swims up to it he is almost eaten by a Mosasaur, then almost suffocated by it, but another Mosasaur eats it first.
At the house Abby tells Stephen Nick’s time has run out. Stephen and Ryan start reeling him in. Claudia has to give him CPR. I’m sure he hates it.

Once he’s conscious he confirms Helen is on the other side of the Anomaly. Ryan and several soldiers in wetsuits head for the basement.
A little later Nick is in an ambulance outside the house while Abby tries to distract him and Connor hovers by the door. When Nick tries to get out of the ambulance he’s restrained by the soldiers. Lester comes out of the house, followed by Ryan and two soldiers. They’re escorting Helen.
