In a flat a preteen girl is playing with her dog.

Photobucket

This is Taylor, the girl, and Spratt. Taylor's father figure Steve isn't too happy with them. Taylor takes Spratt outside, but she pulls away and they hurtle through alleys and into an Anomaly.

The other side is vaguely desert like, and it's either night time or there's a serious storm blowing in. Taylor looks around and pronounces it cool. While looking for Spratt, she sees things moving in the sand. One is coming straight for her...

But she doesn't run. Weird.

Connor skateboards randomly into a suspiciously empty control centre just as the ADD goes off.

Photobucket

He's about to track down the Anomaly when the whole thing crashes. Cutter arrives and suggests rebooting. There's no sign of the Anomaly when the ADD comes back up.

Connor runs a diagnostic and finds spyware that allows someone to run a feed from the ARC to anywhere they want.

Photobucket

"It must be that guy, the Cleaner...what do we do?"

"First of all, find the Anomaly. Then clean up the detector. And don't say a word to anyone."

While they're talking there are cuts of Leek in his car, working on a hand held computer. Helen may or may not be in the car, it's hard to tell.

Leek leads a group of non-ARC soldiers including the Cleaner to the anomaly. He gives them an hour to do whatever they're doing. 'Whatever they're doing' includes animal containers and catch nets.

Photobucket

Jenny, in very nice gold shoes, summer dress and sun hat, wanders into Control. She was at her own engagement party, but she's not too upset to be called away.

"So you'd rather be with us?"

"Well, I was going to say, any excuse. So yes, even you."

She starts to head off to change, but Cutter insists there's no time. No suspicious motives there, Cutter.

Love the simultaneous chair turns when she walks past.

Photobucket

The soldiers see Taylor. The Cleaner insists they ignore her and let Lester's team rescue her. One of his men, who is some kind of foreign I can't pin down, isn't so sure, but before they can decide one way or the other a Sand Shark attacks them. (Name shamelessly stolen from Hercules the Legendary Journeys.) Taylor turns her back, sits down and puts her hands over her ears, humming loudly.

Photobucket

Stephen finds Helen in his shower. Huh.

A little later and not much drier, Helen attempts to persuade him to the dark side. Stephen keeps inconveniently demanding specifics, which she won't give him.

"You're being betrayed and you don't even know it. They're not even being honest with you."

"What're you talking about?"

"He hasn't told you, has he? That's Nick for you, never was much good at trusting people."

"Helen, tell me what this is about."

Also, Helen's got to be using some kind of glue to keep that robe from falling down any further.

Photobucket

Helen calls Leek to tell him to stay where he is even though his team is overdue. Stephen almost overhears but not quite.

Leek hangs around until Nick and Jenny arrive. Helen threatens him some, but he leaves anyway.

Spratt erupts from the Anomaly as Nick and Jenny are studying it. Nick immediately decides the owner must be on the other side of the Anomaly.

Photobucket

Connor asks Stephen's romantic advice as they unpack the truck. It's a nice scene; they're finally getting on, those two.

Photobucket
"Confidence is sexy."

Stephen reminds Connor of Caroline, who he seems to have forgotten in his Abby!angst.

"Caroline...to be honest with you, I don't think it's working out with her."

"Mate, she needs to know that."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"I should tell her. Yeah...honesty is important in these things, init."

I love the look on Stephen's face; first he's amused at Connor, then the 'honesty' statement hits him.

Photobucket

Connor produces a supremely unimpressive rover type robot and sends it into the Anomaly.

Photobucket
"Is that my hairdryer?"

"...might be. Now I know what Galileo had to put up with..."

The Rover makes it through

Photobucket

and Nick and Connor are able to figure out a lot about the Era by studying the footage. It's now day time on the other side. They also see Taylor, still perched on her rock. Nick and Stephen head in to rescue her.

On the other side Nick points out the lack of oxygen. They watch all the really creepy crawlies run past them. That's probably not good. Also for some reason the crawlies are travelling in a column, only a couple of feet wide. It's a little bizarre.

Photobucket

Connor drops some more anvils at Abby, drawing her into the 'Caroline; yes or no?' argument. Abby wisely refuses to be drawn.

"So, do you think I should finish with her?"

"Ahh....I think you should do what's right for you."

Connor dumps Caroline by text over Abby's objections.

Photobucket
"That's humiliating. No one deserves that, not even her."

Jenny returns Spratt to Steve. The cover story is that Taylor has fallen down a pipe. Technically true and all! Steve is Taylor's stepdad and by implication her mother has died.

Nick and Stephen find the Cleaner's equipment; guns, water and food, recording device. Nick is able to watch the last minute or so as the mercs falls foul of the Sand Sharks. It's pretty damn horror movie ish.

Photobucket

"You're not surprised by any of this, are you? What do you know?"

"I don't know anything."

"Cutter, there's a traitor on the team."

"Maybe."

"It's Lester."

"It's someone."

They head for Taylor.

She's yelling for them to get to the rocks but they can't hear her very clearly. Just in time they notice the Sand Sharks and make a dash for it. They make it to the rocks only feet ahead of their pursuers.

"You're welcome." I like Taylor.

Nick and Stephen give Taylor oxygen and water. It's the only time any of them bother with the oxygen despite being in a low oxygen environment. She's planning her own rescue and offers to let them tag along. Stephen's highly amused.

Photobucket

Taylor's twisted her leg but refuses to be carried.

"I ain't baggage."

"She ain't baggage."

"Taylor ain't baggage."

They start off. Taylor's limping a little, but not too badly. She thinks this is part of a new reality show. "It's cooler than Big Brother."

Something has escaped from the Anomaly, something with a lot of legs. Connor and Abby set off after it.

Again. Why are there no soldiers? This is just the kind of time they'd be useful!

The Anomaly's fading out. Nick and Stephen make a run for it, Stephen carrying Taylor much to her indignation, but they're blocked from it.

Connor and Abby hare through a kitchen –

Photobucket
"Hygiene spot check. When's the last time you washed this? Think about it."

– and out into the restaurant proper. The Creature is causing havoc, knocking over tables and chairs. It ends up in the ball pit and Abby and Connor dive in after it.

Abby catches it but now Connor has vanished, until he erupts from the balls.

Photobucket
"Just having a bit of a play, aren't I? Massive ball pool fan, me."

"We all love ball pools, Connor. Now's not the time."

Why is Abby holding it behind her back where all the customers can see it, instead of making some effort to hide it?
Photobucket

They get back to the Anomaly to put the Creature through. Connor attempts to dive in after Nick and Stephen, but Abby blocks him and before he can get past her the Anomaly fades out completely.

Photobucket

Taylor's looking very upset – and sitting on sand, for some reason.
Photobucket

She demands to know when they're going back. The best Stephen can muster is a 'come on, buddy' clap on the shoulder.

At the ARC Lester asks about the chance of it reopening. Connor can't say; some do, some don't. It might reopen tomorrow, or in a thousand years. There's just no way to know. Lester asks about their survival prospects. If they find water, Connor thinks they might have a few weeks. If not...he trails off unwilling to face it.

Lester briskly promotes 'Daphne and Scrappy' to head up the project. He assigns a permanent guard to the site and sends Connor and Abby to start work.

Caroline, in Connor's flat, gets the text. Really, Connor? You couldn't think of anything better than 'It's over!' ? Way to soften the blow, buddy.

Caroline stalks around, gathering up various papers and bits and pieces. She's about to leave when something occurs to her and she starts searching for Rex.

Photobucket

Nick, Stephen and Taylor wander through cliffs. Taylor's realised they're stuck. She unloads some baggage about how adults always lie because her mother downplayed her illness and then died. Nick agrees that they're in danger, but he promises they won't die. Stephen suggests heading east to where there's clouds in the hope of finding water and vegetation.

Taylor warns him "If you try to pick me up again I'll bite you." Stephen is amused more again. They head off.

Caroline stalks Rex, holding a bowl of something. Rex waits for her to leave before venturing out after it, but she's only pretending and tries to whack him with a tennis racket. She misses, but she throws things at him until he flies towards her and she can get him. She knocks him into Aby's punching bag, knocking him out.

Photobucket
"Got you, lizard."

Taylor is playing a cheery game of 'How would you like to Die?' She's like to be eaten as it would be quick, but it wouldn't be so nice for the adults. Nick is desperately trying to get her to cheer up. "Why don't you sing a song, or whistle or something? Anything? Just...stop talking." He kind of sucks at dealing with children.

Stephen halts them when he sees a reflection in the distance. It's gone when he tries to focus, though, and he brushes it off.

The ADD starts beeping, just as a sandstorm kicks up. They run to crannies in the rock, hiding as best they can.

Jenny's watching the pipe hopefully. Connor quietly confesses to Abby that he doesn't think he can do this on his own. She promises he won't have to. The others will be back. Connor agrees, but he doesn't really believe it.

Photobucket
"...how long do we wait?"

Jenny heads off to talk to Taylor's stepfather. The others wait.

Lester calls Leek into his office to ask if there's any news.

"Ah, no. Sorry, sir. Terrible loss. Such a brilliant man...and of course a good friend."

"Are you out of your mind? Cutter and I loathed each other."

"Oh, I didn't realise.(!)"

Lester dismisses him. Leek smiles politely before turning away.

Nick, Stephen and Taylor dig themselves out.

Photobucket

They're mostly unhurt, if a little clogged up, but Cutter's lost the detector. He can hear it beeping, though, and manages to dig it out.

"Remind me to tell Connor he did a good job with these things."

They're about to head off when the Cleaner ambles up, holding a weapon on them. He demands the detector and their water.

Nick deliberately throws the things to land on the sand. He watches the Cleaner back away, trying to distract him. The Cleaner fires a warning blast which is exactly what Cutter wanted. A Sand Shark zooms up behind him and grabs him just as he's about to kill Cutter.

Stephen grabs Taylor, apparently just to hold onto her – he doesn't try and shield her view or anything – and Nick watches him get sucked in.

Photobucket

Stephen abandons Taylor and demands to know who sent the Cleaner. He refuses to talk and is sucked under. Stephen is Not A Happy Bunny.

"You're absolutely certain that you don't know anything?"

"I know one thing. It's not a good idea to run and shout on the sand."

"Good point."

They wander carefully through some sand. It's going well until Taylor's leg finally gives way and she collapses.

Photobucket

The Sand Sharks arrive, taking Stephen despite Nick's attempts to hold onto him.

Taylor starts jumping up and down in an effort to attract attention – her leg seems fine now – and two Sand Sharks erupt out of the sand. Alright, they're actually Silurian Scorpions, but anyway. Stephen is dangling from the mouth of one. The other challenges it and Stephen gets dropped out of the way. He hares back to the others.

Nick snatches up the bag and retrieves the Cleaner's gun. Stephen retrieves a piece of...something...exoskeleton, maybe? Anyway, it's a bit like a sled, and he shoves Taylor in before going back for Nick, who's holding off a Scorpion with the Cleaner's gun. They slide off down the hill to a triumphant rendition of the theme tune and jump into an Anomaly.

Photobucket

"Are we going home now?"

"We're going somewhere!"

The Scorpion does not chase them for some reason.

They end up in a forest, somewhere "within the last few thousand years." Taylor finds a shelter and they're attacked by a caveman.

Photobucket

Nick lays him out without any trouble. Except he's an actor of some kind. Maybe a re-enactor? There don't seem to be any cameras or anything around. Why is a re-enactor menacing two guys and a kid who are obviously not part of whatever it is he's re-enacting?

"That doesn't look right."

"Think I just punched an actor."

"Yeah."

Connor and Abby appear. I would love it if it turned out Nick and Stephen had been gone for ages – but apparently they haven't. Convenient.

Stephen's not happy with Connor. "A few basic plants. Some bugs."

"...what?"

Nick warns Stephen not to say anything as Lester approaches.

Photobucket
"You know, I never thought I'd say this, but given a choice between you and Connor I'm very glad to have you back....you are lucky we don't shoot on sight."

You can't fool us, Lester, you came down to the Anomaly yourself! You only do that when there's danger of death! You love them really.

Jenny has finally gotten around to telling Steve that they've lost Taylor when she arrives back with Nick. What on earth was Jenny doing all that time? Steve and Taylor are now going to be a happy family. Oh, and Spratt, of course.

Nick and Jenny head off.

"I thought I was never going to see you again."

"Yeah? I bet you were devasted."

"Inconsolable."

Taylor puts her head back out the door to demand a job when she leaves school.

Photobucket

Nick agrees. Jenny politely asks permission to change, and he grins.

At his office, back in the ARC, Nick watches a completely fabricated TV report about Taylor's rescue. Leaving the Cleaner's headset on his desk, he heads out of the room.

Photobucket

At Connor and Abby's Connor's attempting to tell a joke to Abby, who's a little distracted by the mess.

Photobucket

Also, Rex is missing.

Nick comes back in with a coffee cup. He's sitting down when he realises the headset is missing. He goes to look around the corridor, but no one's there. This is not good.

Photobucket

He can't have been gone more than thirty seconds! The news reader's practically still on the same sentence. That is some high quality sneaking around.
