On a busy motorway, traffic is basically stalled. A mother entertains her son by explaining where his father is. The kid seems more interested in his toy dinosaurs.

There's a lot of noise coming from somewhere up ahead, and people are fleeing in terror. A mammoth is trashing things. Neither mother nor child make any effort to get out of the car, although to be fair by the time they actually see the mammoth, it's very close to them.

Photobucket

Abby is angrily lifting weights, trying to persuade Connor to tell Nick that Rex has been taken. Connor isn't so sure.

"Why hasn't she given him back?"

"Maybe she's so crazy about me she's going to hold him hostage until I get back together with her."

Oh, Connor. We love your flights of fancy.

Connor spots her with the weights, asking her not to tell Nick. He promises to get Rex back.

Stephen comes in in plenty of time to hear them and asks about the secret meeting.

"I don't know. It's a secret, isn't it?"

Someone has apparently called an actual secret meeting. How do you even do that? "Don't be in the locker room at a time that may or may not be three thirty, definitely not on Friday. There won't be any treats." ?

Connor seems to have missed the actual weight rest and is carrying them around, at least until Stephen calls him on it.

Nick arrives. He turns up the music so they won't be overheard. Then he tells them what they all know already, literally;

Photobucket
"There is someone working against us, someone who has access to the detector. Probably the same person who stole the headset in the Silurian."

Um, no one stole anything in the Silurian except maybe you, Nick.

"Someone?" Stephen is Not Down With This Shit.

"Ok, I know that we all have our own ideas about who that might be, but this time we have to find out for sure."

Unfortunately, before they can make any actual plans, the Anomaly Alert goes off and they all have to go. Neither Abby nor Connor actually lock their lockers. That's some faith in their workmates, isn't it?

Photobucket

The mother wakes up slowly in her car. Her airbag's deployed and she can't see much around it, but her son is screaming in the backseat.

The child's name is Jake. Mother is trapped in her seat; the steering column's jammed against her legs.

She's just starting to panic when a random guy comes to see if she's ok. He immediately starts soothing Jake and attempting to get them out.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Then he gets dead. A moment of silence for Ed, please.

Lester is not happy. "My worst nightmare in one sentence!"

"Mammoth on the M25."

Nick's Jeep – or a Jeep, anyway – is in the control room, where Nick and Stephen are discussing guns. Why is the control room that close to the outside? Surely that part of the building should be the most protected?

Stephen heads to his own car, which seems to be parked in a common area somewhere, to get a bigger gun. Yellow reg, hee.
Photobucket

Yes, I know, the show's shot in London so all the regs are yellow. I live in Ireland, where they're still relatively uncommon.

Helen's there when he closes the boot. Yeah, we saw that coming. He makes her hide as Nick and the others drive past –

Photobucket
"I left the gun inside, I'll catch you up, yeah?"

No one thinks this is suspicious, even though they were just looking at the guns inside.

Helen talks him into abandoning the team and going with her to 'stop Lester's conspiracy.' Stephen, I know she's been working on you for months, but really? You're going to leave your team facing a mammoth and down their best shooter? Nice work there, pal, real nice.

Hey, it's Mick the sleazy pap! He watches as Nick's car pulls up. Jenny, who seems to have taken a different car even though they were all coming from the same place, meets them.

"I've shut down the motorway at the next two junctions, kept the camera crews out, shut down the mobile networks, there's a no-fly zone in place and the eye-witnesses have been debriefed."

"And all that with your skirt tucked into your tights. Well done."

"I'm not gonna look. Mammoth. Go."

Photobucket
She checks as he drives away.

ALP looks like he's trying really hard to laugh there. Also, Jenny, the list is impressive, but did Cutter really need to know the details? You couldn't have just said 'You're good to go' or something? I like the list, but...

Nick, entirely in character, is entranced by the mammoth.

"Oh, you beauty...It's the biggest elephant that ever lived. They were still running around North America until about eight thousand years ago."

Connor gets out of the car on Abby's side rather than the side he was sitting on – hmm, nothing subliminal going on there, then.

Abby thinks part of the problem is that the Mammoth is a herd animal, and it can't find any trace of its herd here. Nick is about to start giving orders when Mother yells for help, sounding her horn.

Connor wants to go to the rescue immediately, but Nick refuses. The car is too close to the Mammoth, and the noise she's making is upsetting it. He sends Connor to find a way to put a message on an illuminated sign near the car.

Abby arrives with a tranquiliser rifle. Nick vetoes it; it's not big enough. It won't affect the Mammoth. He needs Stephen and the bigger gun he was supposed to get.

Stephen is with Helen in a park near the ARC. He wants to get evidence of the ARC programme that he can hand over to the media. Helen's ok with that, except for the part where Lester might try to kill him. Stephen doesn't much care, but he does want to give Nick another chance. He wants Helen to tell her what they're doing. She agrees. Yeah, that's never going to happen.

Connor has got the sign to read 'Shut up!!'

Photobucket
"Tactful."

"That's what you said, isn't it?"

Nick gives up on waiting for Stephen and charges when the Mammoth's back is turned. Abby and Connor follow after him.

Nick climbs into the car after Jake. Abby comes up on the other side of the car and Nick passes the kid off to her. Connor – I'm not sure what he's trying to do, to be honest, but he ends up playing ring-around-the-van with the Mammoth.

Photobucket

Once it's gone in the other direction he joins Abby and Jake as they run past the Anomaly. Abby comes up with an idea and leaves Jake with Connor while she goes to sort it out.

"What about Dumbo?"

"Distract it."

Connor asks Jake for ideas. Really, Connor?

Abby finds a hot little yellow race car and heads off.

Nick finds a jack and starts lifting the steering column. Despite his warnings, Mother can't keep quiet and the Mammoth runs for them, spearing straight through the car with one tusk and then lifting the whole thing off the road.

Connor and Jake climb into a lorry.

The car falls, landing roof down. Nick climbs awkwardly out and tries to wrestle her free, but she's still screaming and the Mammoth comes back for another try, crushing in the back of the car. Nick is a bit squashed but mostly ok.

Photobucket

Jake blows the truck's horn to attract the Mammoth, who gives up on the car and wanders towards them. He also pushes all the buttons, among them the ones that make the back door go up and down. Hmm, wonder if that's going to be important later on...

Nick hauls Mother out of the car and tells her to go and find Jenny, promising to retrieve Jake himself. He finds Abby just past the Anomaly; she's retrieved some female elephant urine from a safari park handily located just down the road.

Nick starts laying a scent trail but the Anomaly closes before the Mammoth can get back through. Nick continues the trail and leads it into the back of Connor's truck. Connor eventually finds the ramp control and seals the Mammoth in.

Mother has found her way out to the ambulances and people. Unfortunately, Sleezy Mick has found her. He gets a bit of information from her – basically that the elephant was weird and there was a funny light – before Jenny turns up. She blanks Sleazy Mick for a minute to talk to Mother – hey, her name is Dina, apparently - and then pulls Sleazy Mick away.

"I've seen the pictures. That thing, it's too big to be an elephant."

"Do you know what? You're right. It's actually a Mammoth."

"I could do without the wind-up."

"Then stop asking stupid questions."

She attempts to leave, but Sleazy Mick pulls her back. Boo hiss, Mick! He's determined to figure out what's going on.

Nick and the others arrive near the road block. They all get out and then dramatically stop, because Stephen and Helen are waiting for them.

A, how did Helen get past the roadblocks, and B, how come Nick and the others apparently didn't see her until they got out of the car and walked five steps, even though she'd have been perfectly visible through the windshield? Still, gotta love a showdown.

And a showdown's exactly what we get.
Photobucket

"So where the hell have you been? We could have been killed."

"You weren't."

"Not this time."

Photobucket

Helen attempts to redirect the conversation to her. This slightly backfires; Nick's perfectly content not to talk to her, but he does want to talk about her.

"She with you?"

"Not in the way you think."

"You've been seeing her?"

"Yeah, a couple of times. But look, this is important."

Bad move, Stephen, he's never going to listen to you now.

And he doesn't, quietly firing Stephen and walking past without stopping. Can Nick even fire people? Doesn't he work for Lester?

I wonder what Abby and Connor are doing during this discussion?

Stephen chases Nick, who demands to know "Are you still in love with her? Is that why you trust her?" Stephen doesn't answer and Nick dismisses him. "You know what, I don't care. Do what you want."

Back at the ARC, Abby's feeding apples to the Mammoth. Lester wanders by to tell her she can't keep it. He suggests selling the tusks; karma gets him when the Mammoth sneezes at him. When it tries to break through the door of its pen Lester scarpers.

Stephen comes up to enthuse over it. Abby – does something with a control? Seals the pen, maybe?

"Pity you missed him in action."

"I'm sorry about that...what about you, Abby? Do you think what we're doing here is right, keeping all this a secret?"

"Yeah. I do. Look at the way we treat animals now, Stephen. Every day a new species disappears. What would people do to creatures they don't understand?"

Stephen tries to talk her out of it, but Abby proclaims her loyalty to Nick. Stephen heads off to confront him.

It doesn't go very well; both are too angry and disappointed to really listen to each other.

"It's always your way or nothing!"

"That works for me."

"No wonder she turned to me."

Nick punches Stephen and storms out, calling Connor as he goes.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Stephen stalks off in the other direction, watched by Leek.

Connor taps away at the ADD. He's a bit nervous -

"Is anybody looking?"

"Nobody knows what we're doing, Connor. They've got no reason to be suspicious."

Um, except that you've been beating up on your right hand man for the past ten minutes, but, y'know.

Connor tries to talk about Stephen, but Nick isn't listening - "Don't go there."

Whatever he's been doing, he finishes. Nick is proud.

Leek is watching. Also, he appears to be drinking on the job. Bad boy, no biscuit.

Photobucket

Helen almost blows it with Stephen -

"After everything he said about not caring anymore, my husband is actually jealous."

"...and that's what's important to you."

- but she makes up for it by promising him her focus is now on the project. Their project. She also touches him a lot, including rubbing the bruise on his cheek. That's – creepy, and also must hurt.

And then they kiss. A lot. It's pretty angry.

Photobucket

Leek signs for a van that's been left in Control. In case we weren't sure what to think, there's a Predator in it.

Connor, Abby and Nick are hiding out in a church.

"I thought a dramatic setting might be appropriate."

"Why, were you hoping for a divine intervention?"

"You'd better pray Caroline doesn't hurt Rex." Abby, seriously, the horse is dead. Stop flogging.

Photobucket

Connor then has to confess all to Nick, who is Not Amused. I love how they're all whispering, it's lovely.

Abby demands clarification on the plan – what, you didn't ask before randomly following them? Apparently Connor has programmed a false Alert into the ADD. Whoever's been siphoning their info will be following it.

"The next person through that door's our traitor." Um, except that you're in an open church, Nick. What if a parishioner comes in wanting to pray?

Caroline meets Leek somewhere. He hands over a huge wad of cash. Caroline asks if Connor's going to get hurt; Leek leers at her. She hands over Rex, asking what the point is. Leek offers to show her. That is...a lot creepy. What is with this episode?

Connor is amusing himself by singing the hymns while he waits. He kind of sucks. Abby joins in and it's very sweet.

They're interrupted as soldiers burst in from the back of the church. I would like to point out that all three of them are perfectly visible over the backs of the pews and the soldiers really should have noticed them.

Jenny is with the soldiers. Connor takes a few pictures. Nick is very upset. How come Jenny gets soldiers and the team don't?

Nick stalks up to her, accusing her of betraying the team. He pulls a gun on her; the soldiers, despite having perfectly clear shots, just yell a lot. Jenny says she was told to bring all the men here. Nick takes the safety off his gun; Jenny, to give her credit, does not flinch even a little.

"Who sent you? Last chance!"

PhotobucketPhotobucket

"...Leek. It was Leek who sent me."

Nick orders everyone back to the ARC.

Lester has apparently not noticed that he's now the only person in the ARC. How does that even happen? Surely there should be a few people left on guard?

Photobucket

Something falls over behind him. Lester is getting a little unnerved as he wanders around Control, where the van doors are now open.

Oh, look, there's blood in the lab just outside control. I take back my objection – we'll assume that there were some guards left, and they've all been killed.

The ADD screens all change to show a close up of Leek, who taunts Lester for a while.

Photobucket
"Now, I want you to feel what it's like to be on the wrong end of your grand disdain. The little man looking up at the big boss."

Lester does not react as he wanted, so Leek sets the Predator on him. He also turns off all the lights.

Photobucket

Lester gets the emergency lights on, sort of, which is not really any better because it keeps flickering and he can't see much except FANGS! He gets a slash to the chest and falls into the locker room. Luckily, the boombox Cutter used earlier to mask his conversation is still there.

Photobucket

Lester switches it on, blocking out his own noises and confusing the Predator. Lester dives through a service hatch into the armoury where he picks up a huge gun and riddles the Predator with bullets. This doesn't really stop it, only slows it down.

Photobucket

Lester runs back to Control, where he notices the Mammoth enclosure. He palms the control for it as the Predator approaches.

He baits Leek into sending the Predator straight for him - "You really are a tiresome little man." He also quietly unlocks the enclosure. Predator jumps from the ceiling and gets taken down with one sweep of Mammoth tusks. Ha!

Urgh. It's...sort of impaled. Yuck.

Photobucket

Lester has a brief moment of collapse before pulling himself back together.

"Good boy. Good Mammoth."

Nick and the others are back at the ARC. Lester, fresh from being checked out, is pulling on a new shirt and tie.

Nick suggests that Lester wasn't really the point of Leek's plan.

Photobucket
"Oh, I see. First I'm a traitor, then I'm insignificant. You're really going to hurt my feelings."

That bandage looks very high for where the blood stain was, but maybe that's just me...

Nick points out that Lester went to all the effort of catching the Predator and figuring out how to control it. That would have been overkill if Lester's death really was the whole point.

"If Leek wanted you dead, he could've pushed you down a lift shaft."

Lester suggests adopting the Mammoth.

Nick 'apologises' to Jenny.

Photobucket
"I really don't know what you're complaining about. I mean, nobody got hurt. The plan worked. –In a roundabout kind of way."

Connor's trying to use the ADD to find a clue in Leek's files. Abby notes how easy he's finding it -

"You obviously know your way around. Hack into them regularly, do you?"

"Oh, yeah. You'd be amazed how much Lester gets paid."

"Mm. What's my middle name?"

"Sarah...you told me that once though, right?"

"No."

Photobucket

He gets as far as the password entry screen, where apparently 'Leek' now has eight letters.
Photobucket

I like that Lester knows Leek's mother's maiden name – if he knows that much about an employee he didn't really like, it speaks well of him.

On Connor's fourth try, the undercarriage of the van lights up. Why is that still there?

Nick suggests 'Anomaly' but as Connor's typing, he notices the red glow coming from beneath the van. Connor's got through the password but Nick's realised there's a bomb and sends everyone running. "Connor, not you."

Why is he keeping Connor and not the soldiers who presumably have a little bit of bomb experience? Sigh. I love you, show, but really...

Nick climbs in under the van to study the bomb. He can't figure out which wire to cut; Connor suggests red, but they're all red. Nick tells him to count down the timer and goes to fiddle with the engine.

Photobucket
"Eight...seven, please don't leave me here! Six...five..."

Connor's panicking a bit as it gets to one, but Nick's pulled the van's battery and nothing explodes. Connor is very relieved.

In Stephen's apartment, Helen is Not Happy about the bomb, and she lets Leek know in no uncertain terms.

Jenny finds the team studying the device Leek used on the Predator. Nick thinks it's a good sign; the control signals must have been picked up by the detector. Connor goes to start tracking them down.

Abby suggests calling Stephen. Nick is Not Down With That.

"Stephen's made his bed. Let him lie in it."

Stephen catches the end of Helen's conversation but she brushes it off, telling him it was a journalist she used to know. He wants to go with her to the meeting, but she refuses.

"You're supposed to be dead."

"Exactly, which is why it'd be easier if I see him on my own. It's, uh - there's a lot of explaining to do."

Photobucket

Connor has tracked the signal Leek was using.

"That's it? There's no chance of making a mistake?"

"I don't do mistakes....often, not in this case. That's definitely the location."

Nick starts to go, but Lester over rules him. This will be a military operation and Lester will lead it himself. Good on you, Lester, about time those soldiers actually did something.

Photobucket

Jenny attempts to cheer Nick up, but it doesn't go very well.

"Look on the bright side. At least you're safe here."

"I'm supposed to be out there doing something."

Connor suggests tracing Caroline's mobile through the detector. He, Nick and Abby head out after her, followed by Jenny.

Lester's team reach their destination.

So does Connor's. It's a warehouse. No one has much faith that she's actually there, but they follow along anyway.

"This is it."

"Are you sure about this? It doesn't look the kind of place Caroline would hang out in."

"Maybe it's some kind of retreat. She was always very...spiritual."

"Or maybe you just messed up."

Lester's team break into the building. They kind of suck at clearing the place – surely they should be checking all those rooms instead of just running past them?

Leek, somewhere, tells his soldiers "They're here."

Nick's group enter the building. Connor finds Caroline's bag and phone, abandoned on the floor.

Lester and his guys break down a door.

So do Nick and his guys. They're facing Leek, who promptly has one of his soldiers cold-clock Nick.
Photobucket

Lester's room is empty apart from a note saying 'Bad luck' and a camera. He destroys it angrily.

Helen coaxes Nick back to consciousness. Leek looms out of the shadows and Nick finally realises that they're working together.

"You're behind this!"

"Helen has been very helpful. But please, give a little credit where it's due."

Nick clocks the rest of the team, all more or less unhurt.

Lights come up, blinding them all, and as their vision clears they see a warehouse full of dinosaurs and other animals, penned in with electronic fences and guarded by Cleaner Clones.
