So quick recap. Leek has been working with Helen Cutter to collect various dangerous extinct and/or not yet evolved animals for some reason. He's already tried to kill Lester; Lester applied a Mammoth to the situation. Now he's captured the team and is showing off his ill-gotten gains. Oh, and Stephen, who's sort of vaguely a bit on Helen's side, has been fired from the team and has no idea at all about what's going on.

On with the episode.

Nick and Jenny are in a cell together.

Photobucket

Jenny suggests he should have kept Helen under control. Nick asks if her fiancée knows her thoughts on marriage; Jenny admits that the stress of the job has imploded her engagement and they've split up. She also implies that maybe Nick had something to do with that as well.

Helen's watching them on a CCTV monitor.

Jenny asks if Nick thinks Helen's in charge. Nick's sure of it -

"Leek hasn't got the wit to do this on his own."

Leek isn't happy about that. Helen points out it's his own fault for being so good at playing insignificant. She also demands he agree that nothing happen to Nick, as previously agreed.

They're interrupted when a guard brings Caroline, who wants to leave.

"I'd like to go home now. I don't want to be involved in anything – like this."

Leek smirks nastily.

Connor and Abby are in a cell together – I like the way Connor's sort of hovering over her, it's nice

– when Leek saunters in. Caroline's behind him. Connor immediately tries to protect her – "You leave her out of it. She's got nothing to do with this!"

Abby figures it out – "For someone really smart, you can be amazingly thick sometimes."

Then Connor gets it. It's sad. Leek proceeds to rub it in.

"People like me and you – we don't get the pretty girls, Connor. We're the nerds, the losers, the uncool."

Connor refuses to be rubbed.

Photobucket
"Speak for yourself! I do alright with women."

Abby demands to know where Rex is. Caroline is not in the mood to tell her, so they fight instead. Connor attempts to stop them but gets accidentally bashed in the nose and quickly backs off.

The girls wrestle for a while more until he successfully breaks them apart.

Lester's realised his team is missing, but they aren't answering their mobiles and no one in the ARC knows where they are. That seems like bad form.

A truck of some kind pulls up to a busy beach. One of Leeks' soldiers, recognisable by his black baseball cap, carefully releases a Silurian Scorpion. There are many shots of the people it doesn't eat, accompanied by loud thumping noises to remind us that it hunts by vibration.

Helen's still watching the CCTV. Nick is pretty sure she has her own agenda, and he defends her against Jenny's accusations of A) being mad, and B) trying to kill him. The sad music plays as he admits he might still be in love with her.

"Not so much to do with love or hate anymore. It goes much deeper than that. We shared something that was unique – we connected. And there's nothing I can do about it."

Back at the beach, a father has been completely buried by his sons, who run off giggling. Some teenagers politely ask a man to turn down his music – well, sort of politely, anyway.

Photobucket
"Hey, do you mind? Mate! Do you wanna turn down the music?"

He responds by turning it up instead. It draws the Scorpion, who eats him. Everyone flees.

Photobucket
Oh, except that one father, who is also eaten.

Lester calls Stephen to send him to the beach, as he can't find anyone else. Stephen agrees to go, but only on his own.

"If I help you, I do it alone."

"You're going to need backup."

"No. If I so much as catch sight of one of your men, I'm out."

A guard comes into Nick and Jenny's cell, taking them both to see Helen, who is posing very dramatically.

Photobucket

She talks about Claudia for a while. Jenny suggests turning on Leek, but Helen isn't buying and sends her to join the others. Nick obediently follows Helen.

Photobucket

Jenny joins the others. Leek breaks up the reunion to lead them into the Creature room.

"Yes, yes, yes, yes. It's all very touching. Now if you don't mind – you wanted answers."

Caroline doesn't seem to have seen it before, so she was obviously just objecting to kidnapping earlier.

Helen suggests changing the world; they know it can be done. Nick is Not Down With That Shit.

"I don't want to change the world, Helen. I happen to think it's rather beautiful just the way it is."

Helen shows off a Predator to strengthen her position. Nick is still not convinced.
Photobucket

Caroline really wants out of there. Leek has meat dropped into all the enclosures, just to show off.

Abby sees Rex but can't get to him.

Despite having said she was taking him to Leek, Helen has brought Nick to a conference room where she discusses recreating the accident that turned Claudia into Jenny. Nick doesn't like it; he thinks there's too much chance of them accidentally destroying something important. Like the human race, maybe. Helen shrugs it off – "Then we bring it back again."

Back in the cell, Caroline is not coping well with her new reality. Connor halfheartedly sort of a bit defends her, but considering he's sitting all the way on the other side of the cell next to Abby he doesn't have too much impact.

"This is just a dream..."

"Stop snivelling, for goodness sake."

"Come on, be nice."

Caroline is now sorry about the whole 'pretending to date you so I could get shitloads of money' thing.

Helen's theory is that the Anomalies began appearing so that they could have this chance to pillage other time periods. Nick is against disrupting the balance of nature.

Leek has arrived and seems unhappy to see Nick. He flicks on a screen, threatening Nick with the others' death if he says anything.

He's contacting Lester. There are a few threats back and forth before he gets down to business.

"An hour ago I released a Silurain era scorpion into a well known holiday resort. I can tell from your face it's already made an impact. I've positioned another dozen creatures in similar locations."

He'll be in touch. Lester asks about the scorpion, but Leek doesn't care; it's Lester's problem now.

Photobucket

Stephen eyes the beach warily, pulling some guns out of his car. He wanders across the beach, jumping every so often. When that has no effect, he starts thumping the base of the promenade with a metal pipe.

Still no effect. He wanders away a little. The Scorpion finally surfaces; he runs it around the base of the prom for a while, but by the time he gets around to shooting it's vanished. He backs up a bit and then IT'S OVERHEAD ABOUT TO DROP ON HIM!

Photobucket

He shoots it with a harpoon, pinning it to the roof. Walking out from under the prom, he calls Lester to tell him it's done.

The Scorpion falls off the roof and runs at him, but he's tied off the harpoon cord and it's trapped.

Photobucket

Nick accuses Helen of being in it for the money. Leek corrects him: it's all about the power.

"In the future money will not mean very much. But knowledge and power will. And I intend to be very, very powerful."

Helen is fairly blasé about this. "I need the right environment to conduct my research."

Nick watches a screen as Leek hits a few buttons. The rest of the team, plus Caroline, are in a large, badly lit room as sirens start going off. He tricks Leek into explaining some of his efforts

"How did you figure out that we'd rigged the Anomaly Detector?"

"Oh, it wasn't difficult to see you'd found my Spyware. After that all I needed to do was remotely upload a modification from my laptop. Simple, really."

"Well, I never saw that coming."

"No, of course you didn't."

and then watches as Leek releases a saber-tooth into the room with the team.

Caroline tries to run; Abby hustles her back to the others.

Photobucket

Connor is confident that Nick will save them.

"Well, he'd better do it soon!"

Nick appeals to Helen, who tells Leek to let the team out. Leek has decided he doesn't need Helen anymore, though.

"You do NOT give me orders! No one does."

Abby paces carefully away from the others, recognising the saber-tooth. It's Valerie's.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Nick edges over to the laptop, eyeing it carefully. After a moment's thought, and a flashback to Connor finishing whatever it was he was doing last episode, he throws some water on the regular keyboard, shorting it out. Leek patches his laptop in to use instead. You know, they keep calling it a laptop, but it's really more like an iPad or something like that.

As soon as Leek patches the not-a-laptop in, alarms start going off. Nick is very happy;

"Connor planted a virus in the detector. You downloaded it to your laptop when you hacked in. In a couple of minutes, the whole system's gonna be paralysed."

All the security systems are starting to fail. Abby taunts the saber-tooth into running into one of the electric fences; dazed, it makes off through an open door while the team run through another.

In the Creature room the fences go down. Various Creatures start running around.

Helen attacks a soldier who was creeping up on Nick.

Rex gets out of his cage.

Helen is pleased they make a good team. Nick says no, he's handing her over to Lester. Helen's confused; she heard what he said in the cell. Nick was putting it all on, assuming the cell was bugged. Helen doesn't believe him, but Nick doesn't care much.

"Now get in front of me before I shoot you."

Helen wanders off on the assumption he won't shoot her. Nick tries, but the downed soldier still has one good grab left in him and the shot goes wild. Helen runs for it while Nick knocks the soldier out again.

Leek's computer contacts the ARC's. How is that good security? Did Connor write that into the virus as well?

Nick avoids a Raptor on his way out.

Photobucket

Connor and the team find a door.

Photobucket

There's a Scutosaurus on the other side, but it comes in handy when two of Leek's men find them. Connor and Jenny agitate it into running the soldiers down.

The Predator breaks out of its' cell.

Helen sneaks through some rooms.

The Predator starts hunting Nick. He tries to make a run for it, but the Predator throws him into a wall. Instead of eating him, it then goes to hang around in the rafters.

Nick decides he's tired of running and fires randomly. Helen hears the shooting and waits until it's gone.

Back at the beach Stephen answers a call from Helen. She tells him Lester kidnapped her and she needs him to be her getaway driver. She also tells him the team is dead on Lester's orders. Stepehen collapses a bit.

Photobucket

Helen orders him to throw his mobile away and just come get her. Stephen obeys.

Jenny and the others head carefully through some tunnels. Rex finds them and shows the way out.

Photobucket

A soldier tries to sneak up on them but Jenny gets him. Connor ushers her out; Caroline goes back to pick up an injured Rex before climbing out.

Nick is still wandering around; he finds the room where the team faced off against the saber-tooth. It's empty, until he turns around and the Predator is there.

Photobucket

He draws it closer with some blood until he can rip the control module off, killing it.

Leek arrives. My subtitles actually say 'Sarcastic clapping'. I love this.

Photobucket

"Clearly a design fault. I'll have to correct that in the others."

"What others?"

The ceiling's covered in Predators.
Photobucket

Nick tells Leek that he can't keep them under control forever.

"One day they're gonna escape. And then when they do, they're gonna kill all of us. You're looking at the end of the human race."

Leek does not believe him.

Something is trying to break into Helen's hiding place. She gets ready to fight it off, but of course it's Stephen.

Photobucket

Stephen wants to go after Lester immediately, but Helen thinks no, he's too powerful. She wants to find an Anomaly and hide with Stephen on the other side. Stephen is Not Down With That:

Photobucket
"He killed my friends."

Leek taunts Lester on his not-a-laptop. He threatens to release his Creatures, but Lester is prepared for that. Connor's virus did, in fact, deliberately send the ARC all Leek's information, including the locations of the creatures. They've all been found. Also, Jenny's called in and the ARC teams are converging on Leek's hideout.

Leek plays his last card; he'll have Nick eaten alive if Lester doesn't back off. Nick attempts an heroic sacrifice - "James, don't do it. I'm not important." Lester has already got there on his own, though.

"Unfortunately, I agree with Professor Cutter. No individual's life is more important than the protection of the public." Lester doesn't look happy to be saying it, at least.

Nick still has the control cap in his hand. He eyes it as Leek counts down the time to his death.

He slams the cap into an exposed circuit box and it shorts all the others. They immediately advance on Leek. Lester watches calmly until he stops screaming.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Oooh, plot bunny! Anyway...

Helen leads Stephen through the building. They're almost out when Stephen spots Nick sitting on a staircase.

Nick can't face the thought that Stephen knew about this, but he quickly says he knew nothing.

"I have never seen this place before in my life!"

Stephen has no idea which Cutter he should be following,

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

but Nick says there's no time; they have to stop the Predators from getting out and destroying the humans. He bullies Helen into helping and she tells him to put the siren on. The Creatures associate it with food, as Leek helpfully demonstrated earlier, and they'll return to the Creature room if they hear it. They and the Predators can destroy each other in peace if Nick and the others seal them in.

Nick sets off the siren and Creatures and Predators start converging. The group run for it; Helen hits the door lock on the way out but a Raptor grabs her before she can get through. Nick kicks the lock mechanism to force the door open again; Stephen shoots the Raptor and they get Helen through.

Unfortunately the lock is disabled. The only way to lock the door now is inside the room, and whoever does it will be trapped in there. If they can't lock it, Creatures and Predators will simply burst back out.

Nick decides it should be him. Stephen starts to protest but Nick brushes past him, pausing to murmur, "Remember, Lester's not the enemy," as he goes. Stephen punches him and slips inside, locking the door.

"Open the door."

"Can't do it, Nick. Can't take the risk."
PhotobucketPhotobucket
"Stephen, open the door!"

"Tell Abby and Connor to stay out of trouble."

He backs into the centre of the room as the Creatures converge.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Nick watches, then sinks to the ground. Helen sidles away as he sobs.

Sad music plays as the group attend Stephen's funeral. Caroline is there; she takes the chance to suggest to Connor they might try again.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Jenny asks Nick for a drink; he doesn't answer, and she suggests another time. He agrees that would be nice.

Lester approaches to send them out on a new Anomaly call.

"Cutter! Had a call from the ARC. New Anomaly. Better get going. – Sorry. Bad timing."

Jenny head off with him; Nick takes a photo of him and Claudia from his pocket, tears it up and lets the pieces fall.
PhotobucketPhotobucket

The team climb into Nick's Hilux and head off.

Helen lays a trilobite on Stephen's grave and asks him to be patient.

"Things can change. More than you'll ever know."

Many Cleaners approach from all over the graveyard. Helen grins evilly into the closing credits.
